London - The Great Wen
Smoke, Music and Money
London is the capital city of UK and is the UK's most populated city, with over 8 million inhabitants. The city was founded, as Londinium, by the Romans at a convenient crossing point on the River Thames. London has expanded from Roman times, developing through the middle ages, to become the major port in the British Isles.
The medieval heart of the port city, referred to as the City of London, is comprised of roughly one square mile. From Victorian times onwards the name London has been used to refer the greater metropolitan area of London rather the 'Square Mile' of the City of London specifically.
There have been many pop songs written by Londoners, visitors and migrants extolling the virtues of London or narrating the lives of Londoners. Here are four of those.
